How To Deal With Self Doubt

Ignoring self-sabotage, recognising procrastination and dealing with your inner voice

Feeling fear, doubt, insecurity and other limiting beliefs?

We all have self-sabotaging voices in our heads because they’re the voices from other people that we pick up along the way; other people’s fears, doubts, insecurities and limiting beliefs.

Next time you hear a voice in your head that says, ‘you can’t do that’, don’t listen to it and replace it with one that says, ‘maybe I can’, ‘maybe I’ll try it’. Let me reassure you that you can get a grip of these voices and you can stop them running the show. It does take time, but God it’s worth it, and awareness is the first step.

The next step is to ask yourself the question ‘how is it serving me right now to be listening to this voice’, and if it’s not serving you, just separate that voice out and then carry on with what you were really wanting to do.

For more on conquering those limiting beliefs, it’s all in my book Change Your Life In Five and you can download chapter one right now for free here.

PROCRASTINATION is not laziness

You’re not lazy you’re just scared! When we procrastinate it’s not because we just can’t be bothered, it’s because we’re scared, we’re scared of getting it wrong, of failing, of not being good enough, of what we’re doing, of not being perfect, of not being perfect ourselves. Underneath all of those fears, is the fear that we will be rejected by others – it’s a basic human fear that we all have.

So, next time you go to watch that cat video, or whatever is your procrastination thing, just take a moment pause and ask yourself ‘what is it I’m really afraid of?’, and then know that most fear is imagined. It will never happen, it hasn’t yet, you’re completely imagining it. And then just crack on and do your best anyway, and notice what happens.

Don’t Believe Everything You Tell Yourself

Don’t believe everything you tell yourself. If you have a voice in your head telling you what you can’t do, what you should do, that you’re not good enough – don’t listen to it. It’s not yours. It might feel like yours, but it really is not yours.

We all have them and they’re the voices of people that we’ve picked up along the way; other people’s fears, doubts, insecurities, limiting beliefs. So next time you hear the voice that says you can’t do that, don’t listen to it.

Instead, replace it with one that maybe says, ‘maybe I can’, ‘maybe I’ll try it out’ because you cannot get rid of these voices overnight. Seriously, I’m still battling with mine after 10 years of working with it, but you can always choose how you respond to it, and you can always choose whether you listen to it or not.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this too: sue@suebelton.com
