“Priorities.”
Plural.
That’s where it starts to go wrong.
Most senior leaders and established founders don’t question this.
They should.
Because the way you’re thinking about priorities is quietly costing you focus, impact, and results.
You’re Not Overloaded. You’re Over-Distributed.
Let’s call it out properly.
You’re trying to:
- Lead your team
- Deliver results
- Fix problems
- Attend every meeting
- Stay available
- Push strategy forward
All at once.
On the surface, it looks like leadership.
But it isn’t.
This Is Where Most Leaders Get It Wrong
When everything matters…
Nothing gets your best thinking.
You stay busy.
Responsive.
Constantly switching.
But meaningful progress?
That’s what gets squeezed.
A Quick Reality Check
This is something I see every week with senior leaders, and it’s easier to explain when you see it in action:

The Shift Most Leaders Avoid
Here’s the uncomfortable part.
This isn’t about capability.
It’s about choice.
Because choosing one true priority means:
- Saying no to other things
- Letting some tasks wait
- Trusting your team more
- Disappointing people
So instead…
Most leaders try to carry everything.
And that’s where focus disappears.
The Move That Changes Everything
If you want to operate at a senior level, this is the shift:
1. Choose
What actually matters right now?
Not everything.
Not long-term.
This week.
2. Back It
Give it proper attention.
Not squeezed-in time.
Not half-focus.
Real thinking time.
3. Protect It
This is where most leaders fall down.
Meetings creep in.
Messages interrupt.
“Quick questions” take over.
If you don’t protect your priority…
Everything else will.
A Simple Leadership Test
Ask yourself:
What is the one thing that, if done well this week, would make everything else easier or irrelevant?
That’s your priority.
Everything else is noise.
Right now, you might think you’re prioritising.
But if everything is getting equal attention…
You’re not prioritising.
You’re spreading yourself thin.
And your results will always reflect that.
Ready to Lead at a Different Level?
If this hit a nerve, good.
This is exactly the shift I work on inside my Strategic Leader Programme, helping senior leaders step out of the noise, focus on what truly matters, and lead with clarity and impact.Take a look – and if this sounds like something you want to get moving forward with get in touch – details are on the page.
